Match Report
Bilton Grange Boys-U9A vs  Winchester House Festival
On: Saturday, 09 Nov 2019
Venue: Away

The boys had been looking forward to this tournament ever since the fixture list was published. Their kit was spotless, boots clean and there was no difficulty for parents getting their sons up and ready on a Saturday morning.

There was a hard frost overnight so keeping warm between matches was a challenge. Keeping fingers warm during matches was also difficult.

Match 1 - Our opening fixture could not have been a bigger test - The Dragon! We got off to the worst possible start, conceding a try within 10 seconds. How would they respond? In style, a training ground switch move was perfectly executed, The Dragon defence was left flat footed and a try in the corner the result. Both teams ran and tackled well, The Dragon scored again but with seconds remaining BG scored in the other corner. 2-2 and a point each.

Match 2 - Beachborough were our next opponents and BG scored two quick tries. Again our switch move and dummy switch bamboozled the opposition. Our tackling wasn't up to our usual standard and before we knew it we were 4-2 down. But this team doesn't give up. 1 try led to another and a draw was snatched from the jaws of defeat. 4-4

Match 3 - v The Croft This turned out be another tough game. End to end running, tit for tat scoring and some fantastic tackles. A 3-3 draw was a fair result.

Match 4 - v our hosts, Winchester House. We were superb in this game. The running and passing game we have been working on all season really started to come together. Support runners found space and we secured our first win, 4-1.

Match 5 - v Swanbourne were our final group stage opponents and the result would determine where we finished in our group. By now our trade mark switch/dummy switch move was slick. The passing was accurate and the tackling hard. 5-2 winners meant that we had come second in our group and would play in the 3rd/4th play off.

Match 6 - v Akeley Wood. We weren't sure how hard this would be so the boys were focused and really up for it. They played fast, running rugby and played with huge smiles on their faces. 5-2 winners, 3rd place and a fantastic experience.

Thank you to all the parents who came to watch, I'm sure you are as proud of the boys as I am.
